the afri foundational and applied science (fas) competitive grants program is usda’s flagship funding initiative for agricultural research, education, and extension. with approximately $300 million available in fy 2026, afri fas supports projects that advance innovation, sustainability, and profitability in u.s. agriculture. funding opportunities span six core areas—plant health and production, animal health and production, food safety and nutrition, bioenergy and environment, agricultural systems and technology, and agricultural economics and rural communities—plus crosscutting programs addressing biosecurity, data science, and climate resilience. grant types include standard, integrated, workshop, and food and agricultural science enhancement (fase) grants, with maximum awards up to $750,000. application deadlines vary by program area from october 2 to november 13, 2025.
